DBMM-De Bellis Magistrorum Militus 15mm  Patrician Romans poncing about before collapsing – back to the drawing board. The armies in the Patrician Roman list cover the period from the rise to power of Aetius as Patrician in the West to the overthrow of the Italian Kingdom of the general Odoacer by the Ostrogoths in the West and the accession of Zeno in the East

Last Thursday’s game of DBMM was about to end for the Romans. dbm We still have a substantial team of 15mm ancients players who follow the family of games of De Bellis Magistrorum Militus or DBMM II. It all started long ago with the brilliant De Bellis Antiquitatis (DBA) Ancients Wargame Rules 1.1 and then came the evolution……of Wargames of ancient battles 3000BC to 1550 AD. Dacians with Sarmatian allies march out against another army…lots of light horse

Bolt Action 28mm WW II skirmish wargame by Warlord Games

“Dragging most of the known world into its brutal and devastating clutches, the Second World War was a conflict the scale of which the world has never seen. From Blitzkrieg to North Africa, from the Russian Front to the D-Day landings, World War II remains arguably the most popular period for wargamers.”

The Headingley Games Club has acquired a starter set from Warlord Games. Dean Heathcote will be putting on introductory sessions on Thursdays by request. Use the the Headingley Games Club facebook page to contact him to set up a session…or contact him via the best Wargames Blog the Web: too much lead.

A game of Flames of War; Battlefront’s popular game system. There are several  players of this at the club and some are getting going again. We have got Late, Mid’ and Early versions of Brits,Soviet, German, US and Blitzkrieg French and German. In this battle the Italians have some good tanks and were confident veteran against a confidant trained US tank army deploying 12 Grants and a support units. Steve Nolan playing Italian got off to a good start by bagging two Grants and rushing an objective on the other side of the board. A reinforcement of another platoon of Grants, a tenacious resistance by the US artillery and recon combined with a long run of poor dice roles for the Italians secured a US victory-just.

Another tense and hard fought game of Twilight Struggle with Bernie last week (one day we will finish this in an evening).

We finished at the start of turn 8. Bernie (USSR) was on + 5 VPs, and would have drawn “WarGames” in his next hand. With Defcon at or around 2, this would have placed him tantalisingly close to global Communist victory. My sense was that if I survived the next two turns, I would be ok. Asia and Africa were in the US bag, and the Americas not far behind. Only Europe had come close to total collapse, but the “Chernobyl” card had allowed me to stabilise it.

It is a quick-playing, low-complexity game in that tradition. The game map is a world map of the period, whereon players move units and exert influence in attempts to gain allies and control for their superpower. As with GMT’s other card-driven games, decision-making is a challenge; how to best use one’s cards and units given consistently limited resources?

Boardgamegeek rates this game near the top.twilight

A giant 24ft by 6ft table of beaches sea and hinterland of a mythical invasion of Ibiza in 1942 was put on in all day epic WW2 game by the Wakefield and district Wargamers last Saturday March 16th. About 10 players participated. Air & sea warfare preceded the landing as the allies fought to seize the two airfields. An epic game and an amazing effort from Andy Tim and others. Here are some scenes from the game:

Ideally I’m wanting to sell them off as one lot. Wanting £300 for them, but willing to take offers.

Cheers Ralph. See Ralph on http://www.leeds-nightowls.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=4996.0

Well, seen as how I haven’t seen it played in time, and I don’t think I’ll ever get round to playing it again, I’m selling off my Flames of War Army.

They were originally modelled as fallschirmjaeger but could of course be used as any Germans!

A good turnout at the club last night for the first Thursday of the New Year. Plenty of interesting games played. Carcassonne with variants, Puerto Rico, Agricola, DBMM, Warhammer 40k, Dark Heresy and others were out for a run.

Two cracking games of the “House Divided” this afternoon. This excellent ACW board game was published in 1981 by GDW and is a strategic view of the events. The Confederates won both games. Several players at the club can play this and will gladly put on a game for those interested.

The Boardgame geek review says “the game depicts the war between North and South from the First Battle of Bull Run (or Manassas Junction) to Lee’s surrender at Appomattox Courthouse – or Grant’s surrender at Harrisburg… Each player leads one of these two nations and makes the strategic decisions which determine the outcome of the war.

The game board represents the United States, north and south and from the Atlantic coast to just west of the Mississippi. [...] The play map contains a number of boxes, each representing a city, town or locations important to the war. These boxes are connected by transportation lines – blue for rivers, tan for roads and black for railroads – which provide the paths to victory or defeat.”
